If you are looking for a good job, the basic requirement for you is an excellent resume, because otherwise you will fall nowhere in the job market, whatever your job experience might be. And especially, if you're looking forward to making a career in Google, then you need to be extra careful. More than around 50,000 resumes are received by Google every week and the company's senior VP Laszlo Bock personally checks more than 20,000 among them. |
Now Bock has decided to help out job seekers by pointing out basic 5 mistakes, which are committed most frequently. He has also provided solutions to keep a check on every mistake. For the same purpose, Bock has shared the mistake list on his LinkedIn page. This help will aid you in longer run, even if Google is not your destination. So try to avoid these mistakes while looking for a job.
1. Typos:
Typos, including spelling and punctuation mistakes, are quite frequent in resumes, as per Bock. To avoid these kind of mistakes, which are pretty silly ones, Bock has a suggestion. Bock says every resume should be perused thoroughly with more focus between the lines. Bock thinks that typos can be deadly as for employers this kind of error looks like lack of concentration and lack of maintaining quality work.
2. Length:
None of the resumes should be two-pages long as in just one page too, ten years' experience can be included, as per Bock. So Bock makes it very clear that a resume has just one objective, to get selected for an interview. It's not meant to persuade any employer to hire you and a long resume can actually test the employer's patience, as Bock says. So the resume should be precise and more focused on the most relevant information of your career and academics so far. If your resume has this quality, then it signifies that you're able to prioritise things in your life.
3. Complicated formatting:
The resume should be clean and readable, not at all stylish. So you can skip the artistic fonts in your resume. Bock has come out with some basic good rules like the font should be kept at 10 and half-inch margins should be left in your resume. Some other key features for a good resume are proper spacing and correct personal information. Your resume should always be a white paper with black writing. The best format for a resume is PDF, otherwise the second option is MS Word and Google Docs.
4. Revealing confidential company information:
If you reveal any secret information of your present organisation in your resume, it means you'll do the same with Google or any new company too. Bock writes that a conflict is always there between an employer's requirements and your own needs. Bock also shared an example of a resume which he received with some confidential information. This mistake should be strictly avoided to stay in good books of any new employer.
5. Telling outright lies:
Never say any lie in your resume, Bock suggests. Some people may be tempted to overstate about their job responsibilities and experiences but this is not a very healthy sign on your resume. Bock points out that reference checks and also Google searches can reveal the ultimate truth which can actually land your job at great trouble. And then Bock referred to our respectable mothers who have sincerely taught us that saying lies is not a very ethical thing.
